In a heartfelt appeal for civic engagement, Democratic Front (DF) President Mathias Mpuuga has urged Ugandans to actively partake in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Following a momentous Jubilee year Mass at Blessed Sacrament Kimaanya parish, led by Bishop Severus Jjumba of Masaka Diocese, Mpuuga emphasized that informed participation in the leadership selection process is paramount for shaping the country’s future.
The Mass was part of global celebrations by the Catholic Church to commemorate the Jubilee Year, focusing on faith and spiritual growth.
Mpuuga seized the moment to highlight the crucial role of the electorate, warning that indifference in choosing leaders could result in a governance void, vulnerable to individuals lacking integrity and genuine concern for the nation.
The party president cautioned that reasonable citizens choosing to disengage from the electoral process could ultimately concede their nation’s future to individuals who may not prioritize the country’s welfare.
He underscored the dangers of letting less reputable figures take charge, which could jeopardize the nation’s progress and the wellbeing of its people.
Expressing gratitude for the moral guidance offered by the Catholic Church, Mpuuga lauded the Episcopal Conference for its recent pastoral letter, emphasizing the urgent need for electoral reforms to ensure peaceful, free, and fair elections.
This letter, outed by Bishop Anthony Zziwa of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, reinforced calls for a reexamination of electoral laws ahead of the crucial electoral cycle.
Despite the church’s guidance, Mpuuga worried about the reluctance of some opposition actors to prioritize these reforms, instead competing for political positions without addressing the pressing need for the electoral reforms.
He pointed out the contradictions wherein some opposition members, who previously dismissed the elections, are now re-engaging, unable to unite for meaningful electoral reform.
His impassioned plea serves as a vital reminder to every citizen about the importance of informed, and responsible voting as Uganda approaches the pivotal 2026 elections.
