Teso Sub-Region Gives DF Over 40 Candidates In Party’s Internal Nomination Exercise

August 19, 20250

In a remarkable demonstration of political engagement, the Teso sub-region warmly embraced the Democratic Front (DF) by presenting over 40 aspiring leaders during the party’s internal nomination exercise ahead of the 2026 general elections.

This enthusiastic response speaks to a major shift in the political setting of Eastern Uganda, showcasing a wave of hopeful candidates eager to drive transformation within their communities through the reformist Democratic Front.

The nomination event, which took place on August 7, 2025, manifested a critical moment for political aspirations in Teso.

Aspiring leaders across various constituencies at different levels, submitted their expression of interest forms, reflecting a new era of political enthusiasm in the region, which has always been dominated by other veteran political parties.

Among the candidates were thirteen (13) individuals competing for parliamentary positions, including noteworthy figures such as Ichoto Julius Jeje for the Kapir County MP seat, and Ebiau Peter Carlos, who is vying for the Kasilo County position.

Notably, women candidates also emerged prominently, with Florence Lyogil aiming for the Woman MP seat in Serere district, and Christine Abeja contesting the same position, but for Ngora district.

The political setting became even more dynamic with the participation of Pascal Amuriat, the Democratic Front’s Vice President for the Eastern region, who is set on securing a seat for Soroti City East in the upcoming 12th Parliament.

A striking aspect of the nomination exercise was the influx of political defectors, with at least four (4) candidates switching from other political parties to join the DF.

Christine Abeja’s departure from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), and Christopher Okwi’s transition from NRM to pursue the Ngora district chairmanship underlined their disappointment with the current political practices.

This shift indicates a broader movement among politicians seeking DF as a platform that embody their democratic ideals.

During the nominations, Michael Kakembo Mbwatekamwa, the DF whip in Parliament, and an MP from Ntebbe Municipality, applauded the candidates for their courageous choice to align with the DF’s vision.

Representing party President Mathias Mpuuga, Kakembo emphasized the party’s commitment to equipping these aspiring leaders with essential skills through tailored capacity-building programs that enhance their political acumen.

Henry Lubowa, chairperson of the DF’s Electoral Commission, proclaimed the Teso sub-region nomination exercise was a resounding success.

He celebrated the impressive turnout, and the evident enthusiasm, which signified a marked increase in political engagement, and a strong desire among the electorate to take an active role in shaping their governance.

The bustling venue, Shaan Gardens in Serere town council, served as a vibrant hub for the nomination process.

The atmosphere was charged with energy, as candidates, and cheering supporters gathered to celebrate the democratic process, creating a sense of unity, and hope that embodied the spirit of democracy in action.

As the political dynamics in Teso evolve, the Democratic Front is solidifying its position as a powerful contender for the upcoming elections.

With an array of candidates, including individuals who have made significant political changes, the DF is not just preparing for a competitive electoral season-it is set to transform political representation in the region.
