DF Celebrates Multiple Defections As Parliamentary Nominations Approach

October 21, 20253

As the clock ticks down to the nomination of candidates for the parliamentary seats in the upcoming 2026 general elections, the Democratic Front (DF) is celebrating a large boost in its ranks.

Just hours before nominations begin on October 22, 2025, the party, which is hardly four months in Uganda’s political fray, has welcomed several prominent political figures who have defected from other parties.

This expansion comes as the DF continues to establish its reputation as the fastest growing political party in Uganda, capturing the hearts of voters with its genuine commitment to governance, and unique ideological stance.

Among the notable defections is Nakuya Aidah, who is setting her sights on the Kampala Central parliamentary seat.

Joining her is Wilfred Nakandi, who aims for the Nakawa East seat, and Nakyanja Annet Mawejje, who is positioning herself for the Wakiso District Woman MP position.

Their decision to join the DF is seen as a clear indicator of the party’s appeal and potential to influence the political arena in Uganda.

In addition to these candidates, the DF has also attracted Nakintu Joanita Lule, who is vying to become the Woman MP for Mpigi district, and Aisha Waliggo, who aspires to win the Kalungu district Woman MP seat.

David Musiri, is another new DF member seeking election for the Makindye West constituency.

The influx of these strong political leaders has bolstered the party’s campaign as it gears up for the competitive political season ahead.

The defections are particularly noteworthy as all save for one of these leaders, Nakyanja, who transitioned from the oldest Democratic Party (DP) hail from the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s largest political party at the moment.

These individuals have expressed dissatisfaction with what they describe as the undemocratic practices within the NUP, pushing them toward the DF’s more inclusive and transparent approach to leadership.

The new members joining the DF are not only viable candidates but are also recognized as renowned fierce fighters against Uganda’s long-standing one-man rule, actively seeking to push for meaningful change in the East African country.

Their commitment to reform Uganda is reflected in their decision to align with the DF, which they believe is dedicated to finding solutions to the challenges facing Ugandans today.

Party President Welcomes Them

In welcoming these new leaders, DF President Mathias Mpuuga expressed optimism about the party’s trajectory, stating, “As a young party and growing, we are open and welcome new members that will enrich our endeavor of bringing forth quality leadership,” echoing the DF’s ethos of inclusivity and its focus on fostering a diverse leadership team capable of addressing the pressing issues in Uganda.

With the addition of these strong candidates, the DF is primed to make a serious impact in the upcoming elections.

The party is increasingly prepared to populate the legislature with members who are passionate about influencing policies that would bring about the change that many Ugandans are longing for.

We stand firm in our call for the decolonization of political institutions, acknowledging that the legacy of colonialism continues to shape power relations and governance structures in ways that limit the full expression of our sovereignty.
